TV and Media Coverage

“Public opinion can be influential, the media can be influential.”

– Noam Chomsky

As a researcher, teacher and thinker, it is my responsibility to bring the knowledge directly to the people. I am often asked to participate in media projects and interviews. The trick with the media is to realize that they are telling a story. They are also selling a story. They need heroes and villains. Nuance is not often a desirable characteristic of a story. So I take my time to make sure I report accurate fact patterns, and make the distinction between what I can document with data, and what is merely my opinion or interpretation of that data. That said, I enjoy interacting and engaging with television and media, because it is yet another “channel” to educate. Because of this tremendous responsibility, I take my time to make sure that the small chunks they use do not misrepresent my views and my perspective. I also try to make sure that I am exposed to alternative points of view and other perspectives to make sure that my own is highly informed and not one-sided. As an academic, I seek a balanced view of any perspective and topic, so that all elements can be uncovered and considered thoughtfully. The blog below highlights more recent media initiatives and efforts. Contact me if you are interested in interviewing me on any of the topics that I study.
